    The Most Important Motorcycle Parts

Motorcycles come in different styles, designs, classes and types for different purposes and uses. However, all motorcycles of share the same characteristics that make them functional.

Each motorcycle has essential parts to make it functional. Although the quality, style and design of these motorcycle parts vary, they perform the same basic function.

The first component that a motorcycle can't do without is the chassis. The chassis forms the frame of the motorcycle. It has to be rigid and sturdy since this part of the motorcycle absorbs most of the stress. Usually, the rear suspension is built as part of this frame.

The chassis of modern motorcycles are made of welded aluminum or steel. Some motorcycles, especially customized ones, have carbon fiber or titanium chassis. These are very costly.

The next main motorcycle part is the front fork. This part holds the front wheel and allows the driver to steer the bike. It is generally made up of two fork tubes that hold the front wheel axle. The triple tree in the fork connects the tubes and the handlebars to the chassis, allowing the forks to pivot.

The engine is perhaps the most important motorcycle part. Without it, a motorcycle cannot operate. Almost all motorcycles are powered by an internal combustion engine. Some smaller motorcycles, however, have electric engines. Usually, a motorcycle's engine is mounted or bolted on the chassis.

Transferring the power generated by the engine to the wheel requires two important motorcycle parts, the transmission and the final drive. The transmission, which is usually in the form of a sequential gearbox, is composed of a number of gears which turns the final drive. The rider can choose a lower gear if he desires lower speed but more power. Switching to a higher gear is recommended if he wants to go faster.

A sprocket attached to the gears pulls a chain drive. The drive pulls a much larger sprocket that is attached to the wheel. The pulling power turns the rear wheel, which moves the entire motorcycle forward.

A motorcycle can't really go anywhere without wheels and tires. Wheels provide the framework for tires. The spokes add strength to the wheels. The tires, on the other hand, provide traction for the motorcycle. There are different types of tires, each one suited or designed for a particular terrain.

Other important motorcycle parts include the suspension system and the brakes. The suspension system allows a much more comfortable ride and lessens shock and vibration when the motorcycle is in operation. Brakes enable motorcycles to slow down and stop.

For optimum performance and safety, these parts should be checked, or even replaced, periodically.
