Safety And The Law Regarding Mini Bike Motorcycles

Many people prefer motorcycles over cars because of their smaller size. And one of the smallest motorcycles that are available is the mini bike.

Mini bike motorcycles, also known as mini motos or pocket bikes, are considered miniature motorcycles. They were originally built for the kids of parent motorcyclists. A standard mini bike motorcycle uses a four stroke engine that pulls a chain to turn the rear wheel.

Another interesting thing about mini bike engines is that they are similar to lawnmowers. In fact, many people think that lawnmower engines can be used as mini bike engines. But this is impossible. That's because a lawnmower engine's crankshaft is positioned vertically, unlike a mini bike motorcycle engine whose crankshaft is oriented in a horizontal position.

Some models of mini bike motorcycles have two stroke engines. However, these models create a very loud and annoying sound. Also, two stroke mini bikes make a lot of smoke if the engine is not tuned up. Together with the vehicle's small size, these factors make driving mini bike motorcycles on the streets illegal in many countries.

In the United States, no mini bikes are allowed on public roads and in major cities. Anyone caught riding such a vehicle in this area are reprimanded and fined by the police. Here, policemen have every right to confiscate the vehicle.

This is also the same in other countries such as the United Kingdom. Here, mini bikes are considered as motor vehicles. For a person to ride a mini bike on the streets, the machine must comply with all aspects of road traffic law. It must also have a certificate of conformity which would indicate that they have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval.

In the Ontario Province in Canada, it is illegal to drive mini bikes on the road.

The stringent measures are put in place because mini bike motorcycles were never manufactured in such a way to meet road traffic standards. In fact, the only places where these motorcycles are allowed are in special race tracks.

Despite their small size, mini bikes are quite fast. In fact, it can reach speeds up to 40 miles per hour even with an adult rider. At this speed, injuries resulting from crashes, falls and collisions are quite serious, even fatal. Therefore, riders must be very careful in handling these bikes. Adequate safety equipment such as a full face helmet, elbow pads, kneepads gloves and ankle covering shoes are a must.
