I did the top end and after 5 hours of riding I lost compression. When I took it apart I found something had scraped the side of cylinder and then ended up being pounded between the cylinder head and piston. I checked the wrist pin bearing and the piston c clips and are all fine. The ring is also in one piece. Thanks for any help on this.

Sounds like time to re-sleeve the cylinder, which is cheaper than replacing. You can check around the web and with your local bike shop to find someone that can do it. It is a fairly common service and should have you back up and running with renewed performance and a few more years out of the engine so long as whatever caused the problem has been fixed.

    Best luck!

You'll have to replace the piston and cylinder head if damage has occurred. If something was pounded between them, the damaged spots will cause pre-ignition because they will be "hot spots" that ignite the fuel/air mix before timed ignition. If you can weld, fill the damaged spots on the head and grind them down smooth with a hand grinder or Dremel tool. It's a casting, so it won't like being welded.

If the piston was loose in the bore, the piston skirt could have chipped a piece off.
Check the big end bearing (lower connecting rod).
If your engine has a power valve, make sure nothing broke.
    Check the reed valves.
Check your air cleaner to see if anything is missing.
I worked on a Blaster - the fastener holding the air cleaner went through the carb and got wedged in the reeds.
